Purpose — a Wellbeing Economies Film

Martin Oetting

Director, Writer, and Producer Martin Oetting worked in marketing and advertising for almost 20 years. In early 2016, he left the world of advertising. Shocked by Donald Trump's first election, he turned his attention to media projects that tackle the central political issues of our time.

Help us bring a new vision for our economies to people around the world. Let's use this film to start a conversation about what our economies are for, and how to change them — so we can all work towards a better future!

When I decided to make a documentary feature film (website) about Katherine Trebeck’s and Lorenzo Fioramonti’s work, I knew next to nothing about making documentaries, and even less about distributing them. Of course, our film would be shown on TV stations and on Netflix. How hard could that be?

Today, nearly seven years later, I know a lot more. Only very few documentaries make it onto mass media platforms. To get there, you have to design your film for these audiences, you may need deals with these platforms even before you start filming, or you have a big name that they recognise. We did not do or have any of those things.

We just doggedly made the film we had to make.

The good news: We not only made a film — we made one that works. I know because people are telling us. After every screening, they talk about how much it affected them, how much they liked it, how much it made them think or learn.

I am not even sure a big streamer or TV station would be the right places for it. ‘Purpose’ stimulates conversations, questions, curiosity about our economic system and our democracies, and about how to keep humanity from hurtling into an ever deepening crisis of ecological and societal breakdown. The best way to make these conversations happen is by meeting up, watching the film together, and then talking about it.

In short:
Our film works.
It works best at public screening events with live audiences.

When this became clear, we realised that we need your help. Over the course of more than six years, I managed to scrape together what it took to make the film. The biggest investment was time — my own and that of the remarkable people who helped make it. Very little of this time was paid for. So we got by. But now we need to continue organising screenings around the world. And we simply cannot do that with good-will, love and spare time alone. So this is our simple ask:

Please donate — so we can turn ‘Purpose’ into a powerful tool for system change. Your contribution allows us to bring the film to countless screenings around the world. Let's help the change begin!

Thank you very much.
