You can talk to Mutlu directly by joining her 1.8 million social media followers. You can see links to her accounts below, where she also releases her music. She'd love to hear from you!
You can find details for screenings and news about the film here: https://www.mynameishappy.org/, or by following our social media posts below:
Co-director Ayse is an acclaimed and award winning filmmaker based in London and Turkey. Her previous film 'Mr Gay Syria' won numerous awards and screened at festivals worldwide
Nick is a highly experienced award-winning filmmaker. His previous films 'The Condemned', 'Bolshoi Babylon' and 'Against the Tides' screened internationally and were nominated for BAFTA & Emmy awards.
Mutlu urgently wants to share her narrative with young women around the world. We want to give her the stepping stones to amplify her voice and catalyse change.
She and the filmmakers seek a social, political and judicial sea change in attitudes towards women in Turkey and to create a greater understanding of the legacy of extreme violence.
Domestic violence and femicide have steadily increased in Turkey since Mutlu’s shooting, while national and regional leaders continue to deny women their rights. In 2021 Turkey withdrew from the Istanbul Convention, the only international treaty that protects women from male violence, after conservative forces in government claimed that it "undermined family values and promoted LGBT values".
Our impact campaign will create a coalition for change, mobilising the film's target audience of Gen Z millennials - and crucially Mutlu’s 2 million social media followers - to shift attitudes within government, the legislature and in society. At a grassroots level the film will provoke debate, awareness and action in support of Turkey's 140 women's rights organisations. We will make the film available to them for screenings and events.
Internationally we seek to partner with policy makers, lobbyists, advocates and stakeholders (we are currently talking to WHO, OHCHR, SRI & FIDH for instance) to create pressure on Turkish institutions to reform their laws, policies and attitudes towards women. We will present the film in their forums and offices, and invite Mutlu to address them directly, in her own words.
As importantly the film will create a meaningful legacy for Mutlu: to fund much needed care and therapy, and to support her journey with the film. Currently she is receiving medical treatment due to her lack of mobility - the injuries she suffered 7 years ago still define her choices. Our impact campaign aims to change that.
